The Fredericton Police Force announced Monday it will partner with the Atlantic Police Academy to deliver the new satellite police science cadet program.

According to police, cadets will learn course materials through the FPF and APA instructors, while also gaining on-the-job training.

The FPF says the program will see 12 cadets train in Fredericton over a 32-week period, which will consist of 20 weeks of instruction followed by 12 weeks of on-the-job training.

According to FPF, the content and instructional components of the program will mirror that of the class offered in Summerside, PEI, apart from on-site residence.

“This marks a significant milestone for the Fredericton community and our police force,” said Fredericton Police Chief Martin Gaudet. “While we are addressing the need to expand our force to accommodate for a growing city, we are also increasing access to education right here in Fredericton.”

According to police, the 12 cadets will join the Fredericton Police Force as officers for a one-year probationary period, and a two-year commitment.

“This joint endeavour allows us to support the Fredericton Police Force by delivering the Police Science (Cadet) training program right in the community,” said Executive Director Jeff Minten.

The “innovative recruitment effort” received a thumbs up from union members of the UBC 911, which represents police officers.

“The onboarding of new cadets will positively impact our capacity to serve and protect the community as well as strengthen our Force,” UBC 911 president Chris Haines said. “The initiative supports the well-being of our members, which is paramount, as is our commitment to serve our community.”

Gaudet added the FPF is “excited” a new generation of cadets to Fredericton who will bring “diverse perspectives and experiences to the force”

The application period is May 13 to June 14 and those wanting more information on candidate requirements can visit Fredericton.ca for more details.
