Taking “measured steps” around the town

I was stopped in the grocery store in Riverview the other day by a This Week reader who said that while she enjoyed my walking forays into the various neighbourhoods of the town, she was on a real fitness kick and needed to know exact distances.

Goldsboro Road in Riverview offers a perfect one-kilometre walk (one-way) for those looking to get fit this summer.

While acknowledging that our intent is more to get people out exploring their town than preparing for a marathon, I have nonetheless decided from time to time to take her words to heart and actually measure the distance for those who are walking or running to a schedule.

Hence, today's walk along the full length of Goldsboro Road in West Riverview, from where it starts on White Pine Road to where it ends on Callowhill Road, is precisely one kilometre each way.

Along this tree-lined street, which will be particularly beautiful in a few more weeks when the buds are coming out on the branches, you will also encounter a little park half-way down the street, and excellent place to rest should you be so inclined.

There are some lovely landscaped homes along this street, and there seems to be a lot of neighbourly spirit.

I always enjoy driving down this street just before Christmas, since home after home feature some of the nicest and most creative and unique festive decorations in town.

That's all gone now, of course, and the energetic homeowners of Goldsboro are hard at work getting lawnmowers revved up and making plans for flower beds and colourful pots of blooms.

On this walk the other day, I thought of naturalist John Muir's comment that "in every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks," because I saw both chickadees and robins aplenty, flittering from yard to yard in search of the necessities of spring.

If your goal is to hike two kilometres a day, a trek up and down Goldsboro will do the trick, and offer a lovely neighbourhood scene as well.
