Could a walk a day keep stress at bay?
Published Friday August 1st, 2008

Paul Fleischman says that when he was walking one day, a fact bobbed up from his memory.
That was "that the ancient Egyptians prescribed walking through a garden as a cure for the mad. It was a mind-altering drug we took daily."
Perhaps that's a bit extreme, and doubt that madness is even a politically correct term to use anymore, but there's no doubt in my mind that a walk a day does keep stress at bay.
I hear many people, especially seniors, say that they don't like to go walking because they would have to walk alone.
Sometimes I feel in the mood for company myself, but sometimes the solitary walk is just what we need to sort out whatever is on our minds.
This week's walk took me up Government Road, which runs off Hopewell Road in Riverview.
It is a nice, hilly walk, great for discovering next day that you aren't as fit as you thought you were.
It has mature trees, well-kept house and a totally pleasant atmosphere, like so many streets in our town.
When you walk such roads, you really understand why we advertise our great quality of life.
People sit on their front porches catching a late cup of coffee and doing the Suduko, children scamper from yard to yard on the usual quest for adventure, and there is a general feeling of peacefulness.
It's a good walk, up to the end and back again, and will certainly strengthen the legs that try it.
