Ready for fall session
Published Friday August 15th, 2008

With the conclusion of the Conservative Party's National Caucus in Levis, Quebec our government set three priorities for the upcoming fall session of Parliament.
We will continue to ensure Canada's economy remains strong in the face of global economic uncertainty. Since we were elected in 2006 unemployment is down, we've delivered real tax relief to hard working families and we've reduced the national debt.
Of all the countries in the G8, Canada has the strongest economic fundamentals. We will continue to build upon our record of excellent stewardship of the nation's finances.
In the last session of Parliament, our government took strong action to ensure the products Canadian families use are safe. We introduced tough new regulations to ensure that products labelled "Made in Canada" are actually made in Canada.
We are also acting to make certain that imported products are safe for Canadian consumption. There is no greater priority for the government than the safety and well-being of all Canadians.
Finally, our government recognizes that meaningful reforms to Canada's youth criminal justice legislation are required. Canadians are fed up with the lenient sentences being handed out to young, violent offenders. All too often these sentences fail to reflect the serious nature of youth crime.
The Minister of Justice and I are currently undergoing a review of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). We are meeting with local officials and other interested parties to hear how our government can improve Canada's youth criminal justice system. We are committed to improving the YCJA so that it works effectively and fairly for all Canadians.
My colleagues and I are looking forward to the next Parliamentary session. There is much work to be done. We've heard what Canadians want, and we will continue to deliver.
