To the editor,

The Coalition for Seniors and Nursing Home Residents' Rights will be providing a written brief to the Select Committee on tax review prior to the August 1 deadline.

We were not able to present to the select committee during the consultation meetings due to limited notification of the dates provided.

On such an important issue as tax reform the government needs to make sure all groups and individuals are able to present.

A fall date would have been more preferable.

The announcement of the consultation dates appeared on short notice and a rush on the government to consult with the public.

We will be expressing our displeasure to government when submitting our brief.

The Coalition has many questions that need to be answered, such as what will the anticipated effects have on seniors and New Brunswickers in general?

What analysis has been done? If so, what are the results?

This should have been made available in the discussion paper if in fact the analysis was done.

The brief outlines many questions that government needs to respond to.

Seniors already struggle to keep up with the cost of living due to rising cost of accommodation, heating, property tax, medication, groceries and clothing.

Some will go without their medication or food in order to remain in their home rather than live in a special care home or nursing home.

This is a reality.
