Whether it's for the children's security or to have more privacy, the installation of a fence requires some basic preparation.

The first step is to decide on the placement of the fence. Obvious? Not always.

If you're not careful, you could end up having either too little material or so much that you won't know what to do with it all.

Worse, you could end up encroaching on your neighbour's property.

First of all, check your property plans. If you don't have them anymore you could go to the town hall of your municipality and check the cadasters.

Build your fence about forty centimetres inside your property line to be certain of not crossing it.

When it's time to decide definitely on the fence's position, use a few stakes and a long string.

Place the first stake where you plan on creating an angle. Stretch the string with a second stake to the next angle to be created.

Keep on going in the same way until you have covered the linear surface required.

When you are surrounded by string and stakes, do a few more calculations before putting up the fence:

Do you have enough space for the table, the barbecue and the play set?

Would it be better to move the south side of the fence?

Should you leave some free space without a fence, for the shed that you need?

Can the pool that you want be installed without having to move the fence?
