Laser hair removal may be worth the cost

Now that summer is almost over (sorry), this is the time when you start looking for the best laser technician around.

You made it through the summer by shaving or waxing and you vowed to yourself that you would throw out your razor and start looking for the best deal in town. But deals are not always the best.

Since laser hair removal is considered one of the most expensive methods of hair removal your laser technician should be qualified and licensed. When you are booking your consult you should feel confident that she is looking out for your best interests.

Before you go for your consult write down questions that you would like to ask. Sometimes we get talking and forget, but these questions need to be answered before you make your decision on who will have the honour of removing your hair.

Remember, you are paying her not only for hair removal but for her capability and knowledge of the procedure.

These are just a few things that you should be aware of when considering laser hair removal.

First of all, there is no such thing as permanent hair removal. It is called permanent hair reduction. Since there are different reasons for hair growth such as medication, menopause or unbalanced hormones then no hair removal procedure is guaranteed permanent.

Laser hair removal works like this: filtered light (heat) from the laser is absorbed by the melanin in the hair (melanin is the color).

As it descends to the bottom of the hair shaft (under the skin), it destroys or weakens the hair follicle. Treatments are continued until the hair no longer grows.

Many people want a perfect result but it's not going to happen. I'm not saying that the results aren't going to be satisfactory but have an open mind and have realistic expectations.

Since our hair has different amounts of color and some has none, what will the laser light follow.

People with dark hair and light skin will have the most success. People that have light peach fuzz will not have good results.

Some people wonder if you can you have laser during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.

The laser light should only penetrate into the layer of skin where the hair ends, so no harm should come to the baby, but you would be off limits to me and I would think that other technicians would say the same.

Also, since hormonal disorder can cause unwanted hair in certain areas it would be best to wait until things have returned to normal before undergoing laser hair removal.

Another thing people are curious about is how many treatments it will take.

Everybody is different and you will be given an estimate depending on the area, the amount of hair and the thickness of the hair.

Cost depends on the area, and since there are many lasers in Moncton and the surrounding area, prices are more reasonable. Prices should be discussed during the consultation.

You've heard the song, "My mama told me, you gotta shop around" but it's not just for price. It's for the reputation and the knowledge of the technician.

A pretty smile and a nice place are just there to make you more comfortable. Her credentials should be first and foremost on your list. Ask around and don't be afraid to ask questions. It's your money and your body.
