Hackmatack author gives reading

The Riverview Public Library will be hosting children's author Larry Verstraete during his tour of New Brunswick in April. The tour is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, which enables Canadian audiences to discover artists from other regions and provinces.
Larry Verstraete's visit is also supported by the Hackmatack Children's Choice Book Award as his book, Lost Treasures: True Stories of Discovery, has been nominated for this year's award. This Atlantic Canadian award allows children to choose their favourite Canadian and Atlantic Canadian books.
This year, the children read from a selection of 40 books divided in four categories: English Fiction, English Non-fiction, French Fiction and French Non-fiction, chosen for their literary, cultural and enjoyment factors.
Larry was born and currently lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He discovered his writing ambitions after reading a magazine ad for a writing course while waiting for a haircut. This course led to his first published book, The Serendipity Effect.
He has since published non-fiction books for children and has also written for science textbooks, educational journals, and writers' manuals. He was a teacher for 30 years and taught at several different levels.
Larry currently divides his time between writing and visiting schools and libraries around the country as a guest author and workshop facilitator. His book Survivors: True Death-Defying Escapes, won the 2006 Red Cedar Award and the 2004 Silver Birch Award. One of his other books, Extreme Science, was selected for the Our Choice Canadian Children's Book Centre in 2000.
He will be reading at the Riverview Public Library on April 24 at 10 a.m. and everyone is welcome to attend.
