Is vanity insanity?
Published Friday July 18th, 2008

I was watching a program on TV the other night called "Vanity Insanity". It was about the extremes people will go to alter their appearance, either for the good or bad. Why do people do it?
My opinion is that when people go to the extreme it usually means that they have past issues that they have not dealt with, since it is our past that makes us who we are today.
People say get over it and let the past go but they probably have their own scares and their own way to deal with it
Children's lives can and are altered by things that are said and done to them as they grow. And of course children can be cruel.
That is where the saying "out of the mouths of babes" comes from. But now it comes out of the mouths of anyone.
I have clients who come to see me and as we go through the consult a majority will end up using the word "vain" or "vanity". My response to that is this:
A long time ago in almost every village there was usually one person that stood out. That person took extra time and extra money to make themselves feel better.
Most of the village couldn't afford to do the same, so they called this person vain. In this day and age there so many things out there to enhance our appearance and most of us do.
I went for a job interview a few years ago in a clinic that did cosmetic procedures. During the interview I was asked this question:
"If an 80-year-old lady was to come in and want all her teeth capped and it was going to cost her a fortune what would you say? Would you do the procedure?"
My answer was: "We are only going around once. If this is what makes her happy then she might as well spend her money. If she doesn't then the kids are going to fight over it". I got the job.
We fix our teeth, lose weight and color our hair. Some go for botox, tummy tucks or other medical procedures and all to make themselves feel better.
Technology is constantly changing and the opportunities are right in front of us every day. Why would we not take advantage of it. If you are happy the way you are, power to you. But I do believe that most of us try one way or another to alter ourselves
I take care of myself. I try to eat healthy and I exercise when I can.
also take full advantage of the machines that I have to keep myself from aging too fast. If this means I'm vain then I wear it proudly.
But remember! When you have laser hair removal, color your hair or brush your nice new teeth, you are also wearing it proudly.
