Dogs are everywhere and it is really important to educate children on the proper ways to meet and greet dogs. The following is a pretty universal set of questions that shelter workers and or Humane Educators will use when teaching children about pet safety. This particular quiz was taken from the website for the Toronto Humane Society.

Have fun with it, take the quiz and see how you make out. I will provide the answers next week.

Kids, the following quiz questions will help teach you what is good to do and what is not good to do around dogs. Most dogs are friendly, but since some are not, you should always be careful to approach them properly.

Answer True or False to each of these 20 statements:

1. It is good to run up to a dog to meet him.

2. It is good to meet a dog without first asking the owner's permission to approach and touch the dog.

3. It is a good idea to bother a dog who is eating or sleeping.

4. It is a good idea to run away from a dog.

5. It is a good idea to tease a dog.

6. It is a good idea to talk loudly and make a lot of noise around a dog.

7. A dog or other animal who is injured is not likely to bite you if you approach him.

8. It is a good idea to enter a dog's yard without permission.

9. It is a good idea to pet a dog before you let him sniff your hand.

10. It is a good idea to surprise a dog by making quick movements around him.

11. You should always ask permission before petting someone else's dog.

12. You should never run away from a strange dog.

13. You should not surprise a dog, especially when he is eating, sleeping or playing with toy.

14. If you are approached by a strange dog, you should "stand like a tree".

15. Before petting a dog, you should let him sniff your hand.

16. You should always make slow movements around a dog.

17. If you see an injured animal, you should find an adult to help but not touch the animal.

18. You should never stare into a dog's eyes since he may find this threatening.

19. You should leave stray and wild animals alone since they may bite out of fear.

20. It is a good idea to treat dogs and other animals with respect and care since animals have feelings just like we do.
