A walk for contented persons
Published Friday August 15th, 2008

It has been said that the contented person enjoys the scenery of a detour.
Sometimes when the normal route we enjoy on our walks is disrupted, usually because of summer roadwork or construction of a new building, it encourages us to walk down a new street.
When work was being done at the base of Pine Glen Road earlier this summer, I was thus inspired to divert an intended route for a neighbourhood walk and instead veered off Pine Glen to the left and walked along a lovely street, Harvey Road.
Like so many streets in town, it is beautifully kept, with house after house surrounded by neat lawns and imaginative flowers and shrubs.
Every neighbourhood has its own special sentiment and this street somehow sends a message of people who care - about their yards, about their community, about each other.
I noticed one neighbour collecting the mail for another, who was clearly away, and others chatting happily about nature watering the lawn for them the night before.
I remember from past winters how this street always seems to be well decorated during the Christmas season, another sign of caring for the community and for our families.
One could make a couple of weeks in walks by just taking every road that runs off Pine Glen.
And if you tire, you can always just pick up a cold drink at the store at its base and cross the street to contemplate the Petitcodiac River for awhile from the comfort of the town's gazebo.
Life is pleasant in the summer for a contented person in Riverview, detour or no detour.
