Your esthetician can give great advice
Published Thursday November 20th, 2008

When I first started in aesthetics I thought that if a client never returned I must have done a lousy job. Now, I know that I am not the best at what I do; I just do the best to my capability.
I had to accept that I could not help everyone with their problems and meet up to those people's expectations. One other thing was that not everybody liked me (hard to believe). Once I let that sink in (and wiped away the tears), I started to pay closer attention to what clients were looking for.
I needed to read between the lines and push my ego aside so that I could send them off to someone who could help them and who might be a little more compatible. In the cosmetic industry there are so many different avenues that a person can go. It's about finding the right person and the right procedure that works for that person.
It also has to do with trust. If you trust your esthetician, then you know that she has your best interests at heart. She has also done her homework when it comes to referring you to someone else.
In our field and with our training we can only go so far. We want to see our clientele grow but if we cannot help or are not qualified in certain areas we need to send them on their way.
There are different levels when it comes to aesthetics. We have estheticians, nurses and doctors. Different levels, different outcomes. From having a facial, to a laser peel, to a full face lift, you need to decide what you are really looking for.
By talking with your esthetician, who is most likely a confidante, she can help guide you in which route to go.
Our reputations are very important to us and we try our best to make the client happy. As the saying goes, we can please some of the people some of the time, but we can't please all the people all of the time.
I consider myself very lucky to have the clients that I have but if I can no longer help them I need to show them the way to go. I do need to educate myself on what is out there also.
I met with Dr. Brent Howley, a plastic surgeon that moved to Moncton a little over two years ago. He was kind enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions that my clients have been asking me.
Since I can't do everything I decided to go right to the source. In the weeks to follow I will talk about the consult, different procedures, the expectations and the outcome when it comes to cosmetic and plastic surgery .
I might not be able to help, but at least you will know what is out there and were to go.
